painting of a woman enjoying a painting by Francisco Zurbaran
acrylic on panel (masonite)
6" x 6" or 15 x 15 cm
The figure on my painting is looking at a painting of Jesus Christ by Francisco Zurbaran who painted it in 1627. Conforming to Counter-Reformation dictates, Zurbaran depicted the event occurring not in a crowd but in isolation. Emerging from a dark background, the austere figure has been both idealized in its quiet, graceful beauty and elegant rendering and humanized by the individualized face.
I create small studies like Crucifixion in preparation for a finished piece or just as visual notes. I often use my small studies to understand the problems involved in rendering subjects and to plan the elements to be used in finished works, such as light, color, form, perspective and composition.
These small studies are exclusively available through my shop and blog. All studies are signed on the reverse.
