painting of a man enjoying painting by Fernando Botero
acrylic on panel (masonite)
7" x 6" or 17 x 15 cm
The figure on my small study is enjoying a rendition of Leonardo da Vinci‘s Mona Lisa by Fernando Botero.
This Colombian artist began his career by copying famous paintings and became known for his 'fat figures'.
His style is unique, recognizable from a mile away and has its roots in satire. In painting Mona Lisa, Botero has created an image that is so very far removed from the delicate and enigmatic Mona Lisa by Leonardo, that this image almost feels like it is a parody.
I create small studies like this in preparation for a finished piece or just as visual notes. I often use my small studies to understand the problems involved in rendering subjects and to plan the elements to be used in finished works, such as light, color, form, perspective and composition. These small studies are exclusively available through my shop and blog. All studies are signed on the reverse.
