painting of a woman enjoying a painting by Alphonse Mucha
acrylic on panel (masonite)
7" x 6" or 17 x 15 cm
Alphonse Mucha was a Czech painter and decorative artist best known for his distinct Art Nouveau or Jugendstil style,
an art movement that was most popular between 1890 and 1910. Mucha produced many paintings, illustrations, advertisements, postcards, and designs.
Art Nouveau means New Art and was a reaction to the academic art of the 19th century. It was inspired by Celtic art and natural forms and structures, particularly the curved lines of plants and flowers. The painting my figure is enjoying is a clear example.
I create small studies like Primrose in preparation for a finished piece or just as visual notes. I often use my small studies to understand the problems involved in rendering subjects and to plan the elements to be used in finished works, such as light, color, form, perspective and composition.
These small studies are exclusively available through my shop and blog. All studies are signed on the reverse.
