This 20 x 20 cm piece depicts a man enjoying a painting by Bart van der Leck, a pioneering Dutch painter and designer. Alongside Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg, Van der Leck helped establish the De Stijl movement in 1917, which advocated for extreme abstraction and simplicity.
Within this work of art by Van der Leck, a bird is broken down into horizontal, vertical, and diagonal black lines, accompanied by floating planes of color. This represents a quest for the universal essence of the visible world—the ultimate reality, so to speak. By capturing a viewer observing this abstraction, I bring the visible world back into the composition, bringing the artistic cycle full circle.
