Kelly put great emphasis on the tensions between the 'figure' and the 'ground' in his paintings, aiming to establish dynamism within otherwise flat surfaces. 'The space I was interested in was not the surface of the painting, but the space between you and the painting,' Kelly said. And that's basically what I painted by adding the viewer.
