painting of man in front of parking automat
G. Boersma
acrylic on masonite
60 x 45 cm | 23.6 x 17.7 in
2007
Through a window in a parking garage, I watched a man attempting to pay at a ticket terminal. While this little slice of life appears completely normal on the surface, to me it spoke volumes about our relationship with modern technology.
There is no doubt that technology has done an immense amount for us, but I also feel that it has 'undone' a lot in return. It is a Faustian bargain. Where there used to be a human being behind a service counter, there is now only a cold machine.
The parking garage structure and the terminal literally create a physical and visual cage, highlighting a modern sense of isolation. The pervasive nature of automation can be devastating to our core humanity, acting as a silent barrier to genuine connection.
By freezing this mundane interaction on panel, I invite the viewer to pause and reflect on their own relationship with the technology that surrounds us daily on all sides.
