Katz By Katz
painting of man enjoying painting by Alex Katz
acrylic on panel (masonite)
8" x 8" or 20 x 20 cm
Katz was one of the first artists to return to figurative painting following Abstract art’s dominance at midcentury. Katz’s simplification of forms and elimination of detail relates to hard-edged Color-Field painting and to Pop Art’s emulation of commercial graphics—two early 1960s styles that influenced him.
Katz began concentrating on casual portraiture of family and friends in the late 1950s. Self-portraits appear periodically throughout his career. Never one to dwell on inner psychology, I wonder what my figure makes of this self portrait.
I create small studies like Katz By Katz in preparation for a finished piece or just as visual notes. I often use my small studies to understand the problems involved in rendering subjects and to plan the elements to be used in finished works, such as light, color, form, perspective and composition.
These small studies are exclusively available through my shop and blog. All studies are signed on the reverse.
