While walking on the strip I realized that Las Vegas is the one city entirely devoted to entertainment. People smoking, drinking and gambling everywhere. It supposed to be fun, but after a while it started to feel really superficial to me.
This wasn’t really having fun. All the lights, glitter, neon signs and what have you were covering up something. It was hard to put my finger on what it was exactly, but I guess I sensed a certain sadness in the air. A false hope of a get rich quick scheme and I’m pretty sure I felt the emptiness of it all.
That’s the feeling I tried to convey in my painting MGM Riches. Not so much the loneliness of an aging guy behind a row of brightly lit slot machines. No, I wanted to capture the spiritual emptiness of it all and still make something beautiful out of it too.
