I love to create a dialogue with art history, reinterpreting classic imagery through a contemporary lens. This painting, Mocking of Christ, inserts a modern spectator directly into the chaotic scene of Matthias Grünewald’s 1503 masterpiece, where a blindfolded Jesus is tormented by a grotesque looking crowd.
Instead of intervening, the modern figure casually holds up his smartphone to film the entire episode—transforming a human tragedy into digital content and quietly joining the ranks of the historical mockers.
It goes to show that human cruelty is of all times and that there's no limit to what we do to each other. But it doesn't have to be like that.
